Gods and Religion

The Vikings lived in a chaotic, perilous world, and their gods reflected the dangers that surrounded them. From Odin, father of the gods and a cunning war leader who dispensed both wisdom and betrayal, to Thor, friend of the ordinary man who battled giants to protect humanity. From Freyja, beautiful goddess of love who rode in a chariot pulled by cats, to Loki, a trickster and the dark heart of the Viking pantheon, the Viking gods were flawed and fallible, reflections of Viking society. From gods, religion to ritual burials vikings and slavs created a pegan strong hold reaching beyond europe. At the end of the Viking age the power of Christianity entered Scandinavia, winning faithful converts and enabling the creation of Norway, Denmark and Sweden as true nation-states.
